Just as General Petraeus is set to give his report before Congress on our efforts to defeat our enemies, Moveon.org is working to defeat its enemies, which just so happens to include General Petraeus. The modern left must destroy any who do not toe the line. General Petraeus’ crime is his refusal to ignore the facts on Iraq. This kind of assault is not only despicable, but it’s also damaging to our nation. The Soviet’s long counted on leftist “useful idiots” to undermine America and assist them during the Cold War. Now the jihadists are learning that they can rely on these same “useful idiots” to sabotage America in it’s current fight.

It’s out in the open, for anyone who cares to see it. Treason, in the highest positions of our government. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) says that the war in Iraq is lost. Which of course is far from true. Unlike his fellow democrats who are content with boycotting General Petraeus’ reporting on war progress, Reid is at least willing to hear him out. And by hear him out, I mean ignore everything he says. But why? Why not listen to what he reports and then judge it on the merits. Answer: he and his party are invested in defeat. In his own words: “We’re going to pick up Senate seats as a result of this war.” But only if we lose. If we win, there’s no political spoils to be had by the party which has been crying defeat since the start. Therefore winning is off the table. They’re selling out the soldiers and surrendering to Al Qaeda and Iran all for the sake of senate seats.
Whatever the eventual outcome in Iraq, I hope we can look back on this as hubris. A monumental political miscalculation for which the democrats suffered dearly. I hope there is enough sense left in the American electorate to punish these opportunists severely. So severly as to eradicate the dangerous and treasonous tendency to put political ascendancy above country. And to exorcize it from the entrenched political culture for generations. If not, if we as a people tolerate this, I see little hope for the republic.

This is the single best opinion piece I’ve ever read on how to go about winning against the Iraqi insurgents. It also contains lessons on why we’ll lose if we let ourselves.
Unfortunately, as expressed in the article, the weakest link in western counterinsurgency ability has always been the leftists controlling the dialogue at home, fabricating one artificial defeat after another. General Petraeus may be doing very well in Iraq, and ultimately he may succeed in breaking the insurgency’s hold on the Iraqi population. But it won’t matter if the left continues to dispirit us here at home. We’ll lose despite victory on the ground. Just like the French in Algeria and ourselves in Vietnam.
But there is hope. We’re making progress in negating the one piece of the equation where militant ideological extremists and their leftists allies can manage to tip things against us. I’m talking about the media. Broadcast TV and print are practically lost causes, impenetrable fortresses of defeatist liberalism. But in radio and the internet we can rob them of their advantage. If you’re here reading this, realize that you are standing in the middle of the pivotal battlefield for the survival of our way of life. A virtual battlefield for the hearts and minds of America. To make a dramatic overstatement, Western Civilization lives or dies here on the internet with the click of a mouse.
The weapons which will achieve victory on this battlefield: Common sense, good judgment, and skepticism. Question everything. Critical thought is the left’s Achilles’ Heel. And most of all, make your voice heard. In that regard, making our voices heard, we’ve got a lot of ground to make up. The time our ideological adversaries save by dispensing with critical thought and avoiding the rigors of capitalism they devote to political expression of every variety imaginable. I contend that your typical liberal activist is so devoid of thought, that were his brain removed the mouth might continue speaking for hours before exhausting itself. We have to drown these people out.
Reshaping the debate in our favor is the only way to succeed against the challenges we will face this century.

Democrats want Iraq pullout by fall 2008
In a direct challenge to President Bush, House Democrats unveiled legislation Thursday requiring the withdrawal of U.S. combat troops from Iraq by the fall of next year.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi said the deadline would be added to legislation providing nearly $100 billion the Bush administration has requested for fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
She told reporters the measure would mark the first time the new Democratic-controlled Congress has established a “date certain” for the end of U.S. combat in the four-year-old war that has claimed the lives of more than 3,100 U.S. troops.
Within an hour of Pelosi’s news conference, House Republican Leader John Boehner attacked the measure. He said Democrats were proposing legislation that amounted to “establishing and telegraphing to our enemy a timetable” that would result in failure of the U.S. military mission in Iraq.
“Gen. (David) Petraeus should be the one making the decisions on what happens on the ground in Iraq, not Nancy Pelosi or John Murtha,” the Ohio Republican added. . .
We got spanked in Vietnam thanks to Lyndon Johnson appointing himself as a General. Permitting the commission of General Pelosi would be equally disastrous for our efforts in Iraq. Just to give an idea of the level of ignorance we are dealing with her, wrap your mind around this strategic gem:
According to an explanation of the measure distributed by Democratic aides, the timetable for withdrawal would be accelerated if the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki did not meet goals for providing for Iraq’s security.
Soldier: “General Pelosi, the Iraqi’s need us now more than ever…what should we do?”
Pelosi: “Well, if they need us, that means we must go!”
Soldier: “Why is that?”
Pelosi: “To show them we mean business!”
Soldier: “But shouldn’t we be sending that message to the enemy?”
Pelosi: “Are you daft, son? We must convince the enemy we are willing to talk to them and forgive them.”
Soldier: *Beats head against wall*

Could this man do the trick? I’m actually optimistic that a sound Baghdad strategy could change things in this war effort significantly.
Immediately after the president’s speech, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said, “I heard nothing new.” Nothing? When Gen. David Petraeus takes command of U.S. forces in Iraq, it will mark the start of an historic turn in military strategy in Iraq and perhaps in U.S. war-fighting doctrine.
Read about what General Petraeus brings to the table.
Once Bagdhad is pacified, all that remains to be done is to secure the Iraqi borders, destroy Iranian weapons production capability, and wipe out Sadr and his militia. Then we can finish up training the Iraqi army and retire from the theater victorious.
