Who Sprinkled Blair With Islamist Indoctrination Dust?
To me, the most remarkable thing about the Koran is how progressive it is. I write with great humility as a member of another faith. As an outsider, the Koran strikes me as a reforming book, trying to return Judaism and Christianity to their origins, much as reformers attempted to do with the Christian church centuries later. The Koran is inclusive. It extols science and knowledge and abhors superstition. It is practical and far ahead of its time in attitudes toward marriage, women, and governance.
Under its guidance, the spread of Islam and its dominance over previously Christian or pagan lands were breathtaking. Over centuries, Islam founded an empire and led the world in discovery, art, and culture. The standard-bearers of tolerance in the early Middle Ages were far more likely to be found in Muslim lands than in Christian ones.
It’s rather inexplicable that someone like Tony Blair, who has shown rare vision in understanding the serious threat posed by Islamic Jihad, could be so utterly ignorant on an issue like this. This is truly a statement straight out of bizzaro-land.
Let’s take a look at some of Blair’s absurdly backwards claims. He says that the Qur’an is “inclusive,” with the goal of “trying to return Judaism and Christianity to their origins”. No serious analysis of Qur’anic doctrine could ever make such an assertion. The Qur’an claims that the Christians and Jews deliberately altered their religious documents to hide references to the coming of the prophet Muhammed.
Allah did aforetime take a covenent from the Children of Israel. . . . But because of their breach of their covenant, We cursed them, and made their hearts grow hard; they change the words from their (right) places and forget a good part of the message that was sent them. . . . From those, too, who call themselves Christians, We did take a covenant, but they forgot a good part of the message that was sent them: so we estranged them, with enmity and hatred between the one and the other, to the day of judgement. (Qur’an 5:12-16)
Jews and Christians who have refused to accept Muhammed as a prophet are considered renegades of true faith. I fail to see how, in declaring that it knows the Jewish and Christian faiths better than the Jews and the Christians, Islam can be considered “tolerant”. Muhammads legacy of “reform” was no more than a call to the Christians and Jews to convert to Islam, the one true faith, and when they refused he made war upon them.
Blair’s claim that the Qur’an was ahead of its time with regard to women is equally beyond comprehension. Muhammad was enitrely a man of his times in this regard, not itself a horrible offense, but one that has become problematic in present times because of his unique status as a perfect man. Muhammad married Aisha at the age of 7 and consummated the union when she was 9 (he was in his fifties). Thus, it is from his example that Iran allows for girls to be married at the age of 9. Marriage at such ages is also quite common in countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan.
There are many more examples of the inferior status of women under Islam. Their testimony is worth only half a man’s. A son’s inheritance must be twice that of a daughter. Disobedient wives are to be beaten:
Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. (Qur’an 4:34)
I see little here to suggest Muhammad’s revelations were ahead of their times in any domain, but certainly not with regard to women. I don’t see this tolerance Blair speaks of, neither in doctrine nor in practice. When you consider that virtually every conflict currently engaged across the globe has Muslims on one side, such declarations are rendered hollow. It is quite clear, unfortunately, that Tony Blair has never bothered himself to read the Qur’an.
